If you've ever wondered why the dates in Genesis feel slightly inconsistent — why lifespans are measured in centuries, why certain genealogies don't quite line up — the Book of Jubilees was written to resolve exactly those questions.
Jubilees is a retelling of Genesis through the early chapters of Exodus, structured around a sacred calendar system based on units of 49 years (one jubilee). It was composed sometime in the 2nd century BC and was widely read in Second Temple Judaism. Like the Book of Enoch, it was preserved intact by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church while largely disappearing from Western Christianity after the 4th century council decisions that narrowed the canon.
What Jubilees Adds to Genesis
Jubilees doesn't replace Genesis — it fills in its gaps. Some of what it adds:
Names for unnamed figures. Genesis leaves many characters nameless. Jubilees names them — the wives of the patriarchs, the mothers of major figures — creating a much fuller genealogy than Genesis provides.
The origin of religious observances. Why does Israel observe the Sabbath? Why are certain foods forbidden? Jubilees traces these observances directly to the patriarchs, framing them as eternal laws given before Sinai rather than Mosaic innovations.
A solar calendar. One of Jubilees' most striking features is its insistence on a 364-day solar calendar rather than the lunar calendar later used in rabbinic Judaism. The Essene community at Qumran used exactly this calendar — and fragments of Jubilees were among the most common texts found in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Why It Was Removed
Jubilees was too specific. Its insistence on a particular calendar, its naming of unnamed figures, and its assertion that certain laws predated Moses were seen as potentially problematic once the rabbinic tradition began standardizing its own calendar and legal framework. For the emerging church, a text that grounded Christian observance in pre-Mosaic patriarchal tradition was simply not prioritized.
